Some of the largest black bears in the world have been recorded on the island of Newfoundland. The Newfoundland black bear is generally larger than its mainland relatives, ranging in size from 200-600lbs and average approximately 350 lbs. Approximately 10,000 of these mighty bruins roam the island. As a result, Newfoundland maintains the highest success rates in North America. Black Bears are thought to have been isolated on Newfoundland for over 10,000 years allowing them to evolve into a distinct breed of super predatory bears.
